Payne #40 — Isa 61:1–2
Year of the LORD's favor; Payne argues the partial reading in Luke 4 is itself prophetically significant
Isaiah spoke of a coming 'year of the Lord's favor'—a time of divine grace and restoration.
to proclaim the year of the LORD's favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn,
"to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."
Isaiah spoke of a coming 'year of the Lord's favor'—a time of divine grace and restoration. When Jesus read this passage in Nazareth, he stopped mid-sentence, omitting the phrase about 'the day of vengeance.' His first coming was about grace, not judgment. The year of favor had arrived in person, and all who would receive it were welcome.
Jesus, keep me close to You in service. Let this lesson turn knowledge into prayerful action.
