The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah • Appendix IX
Cut off from the living in full Messianic treatment of Isaiah 53
Isaiah described the Servant being taken away by oppression and judgment, cut off from the land of the living.
By oppression and judgment he was taken away. Yet who of his generation protested? For he was cut off from the land of the living; for the transgression of my people he was punished.
"In his humiliation he was deprived of justice. Who can speak of his descendants? For his life was taken from the earth."
Isaiah described the Servant being taken away by oppression and judgment, cut off from the land of the living. The Ethiopian eunuch was reading this very passage when Philip met him on the desert road. Philip explained that this was about Jesus—unjustly condemned, killed for others' transgressions. The ancient prophecy became the gateway to faith for a man from the ends of the earth.
Crucified Savior, let Cut Off from the Living humble me. Teach me to hate sin, love holiness, and trust Your mercy fully.
