Lesson 188PassionMessianic Psalm

Tongue Cleaves, "I Thirst"

The psalmist described a mouth dried like pottery and a tongue stuck fast — the agony of dehydration in death.

Old Testament

Psalm 22:15

My mouth is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth; you lay me in the dust of death.

New Testament

John 19:28

Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, "I am thirsty."

Why This Matters

The psalmist described a mouth dried like pottery and a tongue stuck fast — the agony of dehydration in death. On the cross, Jesus said 'I am thirsty,' and John explicitly notes it was to fulfill Scripture. The Passion Psalm's details were lived out in Christ's final hours.

Reflection

Jesus, thank You for bearing what I could never bear. Through this lesson, grow gratitude that changes how I live.
