Payne #4 — Num 24:17
Star from Jacob, scepter from Israel; Payne treats Balaam's oracle as one of the earliest royal messianic predictions
Balaam, a pagan prophet hired to curse Israel, instead foretold a star rising from Jacob—a royal figure who would rule with a scepter.
I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near. A star will come out of Jacob; a scepter will rise out of Israel.
and asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him."
Balaam, a pagan prophet hired to curse Israel, instead foretold a star rising from Jacob—a royal figure who would rule with a scepter. When the Magi followed a star to find the newborn king of the Jews, they were tracing a thread woven into Scripture centuries before. Even the heavens announced what Balaam foresaw: a King had risen in Israel.
Lord, the line from Numbers 24:17 to Matthew 2:2 reminds me that You work through real families and real history. Ground my faith in Your covenant.
