Payne #35 — Isa 53:4–5
He took up our pain and bore our suffering; Payne calls this the substitutionary heart of all OT atonement imagery
This lesson explores how Isaiah 53:4 connects to Jesus.
Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted.
This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: "He took up our infirmities and bore our diseases."

Taking our infirmities applied to Messiah bearing Israel's diseases in Talmud (Sanh. 98b)
Isaiah described the Servant bearing human pain and suffering. Matthew applies this not to the cross but to Jesus' healing ministry—every sick person he healed was a partial fulfillment of this prophecy. Jesus did not merely cure symptoms; he took upon himself the weight of human brokenness. His compassion was not optional; it was his prophetic calling.
Lord Jesus, shape my daily life after Your ministry. As Isaiah 53:4 meets Matthew 8:17, teach me to serve with compassion and truth.
