Payne #35 — Isa 53:4–5
He took up our pain and bore our suffering; Payne calls this the substitutionary heart of all OT atonement imagery
Isaiah described the Servant bearing human pain and suffering.
Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted.
This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: "He took up our infirmities and bore our diseases."
Isaiah described the Servant bearing human pain and suffering. Matthew applies this not to the cross but to Jesus' healing ministry—every sick person he healed was a partial fulfillment of this prophecy. Jesus did not merely cure symptoms; he took upon himself the weight of human brokenness. His compassion was not optional; it was his prophetic calling.
Jesus, keep me close to You in service. Let this lesson turn knowledge into prayerful action.
